Heritage Bank is one of Nigeria’s commercial banks with over 2.3M depositors. Its mobile banking app had grown outdated, with clunky navigation, poor onboarding, inconsistent design, and no dark mode. These issues left users frustrated and stakeholders dissatisfied.

Background
A bit of context
Heritage Bank is one of Nigeria’s commercial banks with over 2.3M depositors. Its mobile banking app had grown outdated, with clunky navigation, poor onboarding and an inconsistent design. These issues left users frustrated and stakeholders dissatisfied.

My role
As lead product designer, I owned both UX and UI. I began with a UX audit, analysed more than 200 App Store reviews and benchmarked leading fintech apps. Onboarding and transfers emerged as the biggest sources of friction.
Our Solution
Onboarding
I redesigned the experience for new users, returning customers and Padie users. New customers can set up a profile with an account number and OTP, while returning users can quickly sign in and use biometrics for later sessions.
Reflections
A new home and navigation
The home screen surfaces transfers, bills and account history. A new bottom navigation brings Home, Transactions, Self-Service and Profile within one or two taps.

A scalable design system
I created a component-based system using tokens for colour, spacing and typography, making it easier for engineers to switch themes, introduce new modules and maintain consistency.
